Causes of Facial Acne
Acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, which is made up of a hair follicle, a hair and a sebaceous gland. These units can be found everywhere on the body except the palms, soles and top of the feet and the lower lip. Most pilosebaceous are found on the face, upper neck and chest. Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum, which is responsible for keeping hair and skin moist.
Facial Acne and Bacteria
Bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes is always present on the skin; it uses sebum as a nutrient for growth. People with facial acne have more of these bacteria in their follicles than people without acne. The presence of bacteria attracts white blood cells to the follicle. These cells produce an enzyme that damages the wall of the follicle and allows the contents of the follicle to enter the dermis. This process causes an inflammatory reaction resulting in papules (red bumps), pustules and nodules.
